March 3rd marks World Hearing Day, an annual campaign to raise awareness on hearing loss prevention and advocating for better hearing healthcare worldwide.

Local audiologist Ben Hoddinott from The Little Hearing Co advises that World Hearing Day is a great opportunity for Bayside locals to get their hearing checked.

“In Australia, over 3.6 million people have some level of hearing loss.” says Ben (pictured left). “Unfortunately, we know that many people with hearing loss can take years to do something about it. In the meantime their mental health, social participation and work lives can be impacted. It can also have wide reaching impacts on their families and friends. If you or a loved one is experiencing hearing difficulties, there is a wide range of programs and devices which can help.”

Ben adds that World Hearing Day is an important prompt for people to see a specialist and not put up with hearing difficulties.

“Hearing well is such an important part of life, and we don’t want anyone to put off having their test because of the cost. It only takes a few minutes to book a test via our website or by giving our clinic a call.” he says.

Throughout March The Little Hearing Co. are offering up to 50% off their comprehensive hearing assessments, with rebates also available through Medicare with a referral from a doctor.

Ben stresses that prevention is better than a cure and advises limiting exposure to loud noises, using hearing protection (such as ear plugs) and getting your hearing checked annually.

For further info on The Little Hearing Co, visit www.littlehearingco.com or phone them on (07) 3843 5401.

A new challenge has surfaced in the wake of the smoking epidemic, a challenge with profound health implications: the rapid rise of vaping.

A phenomenon that was barely on our radar a decade ago now involves an estimated 4.3 million individuals in Great Britain alone, equating to 9.1% of the adult population. Figures are higher in Australia – 9.3%.

This is a call to action because vaping is a cloaked hazard. Vaping was initially hailed as a safer alternative to smoking, but it is now unmasking its true colours.

Early research indicates links to lung damage, heart disease and a host of other health issues. Alarmingly, the impact on youth is profound, with a stark increase in vaping among school students raising fears of long-term addiction and health risks.

The reality is clear: vaping is not a safe harbour. And it’s not cool and it does not make people look better.

Hypnotherapy Vaping Cessation is necessary because it works. Studies, including those published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, have demonstrated the efficacy of hypnotherapy in smoking cessation.

The parallels between smoking and vaping – particularly in terms of addiction and habit – suggest that hypnotherapy is uniquely positioned to help a growing demographic desperate for solutions.

Vapers are diverse – ex-smokers turned to vaping; dual users, juggling cigarettes and e-cigarettes; non-smokers trying it for the first time, out of curiosity.

If you have any concerns raised by this article, call Suzy on 0409 429101 to discuss your needs / habits / causes of vaping and how to change them.

Published a few weeks ago the brand new 30 page guide is packed with information on what to do, where to go and where to eat in Wynnum (and Manly) in 2024. You can also check updates through the year on their website visitwynnummanly.com.au and read the guide online here.

Distribution is already underway, with 10,000 copies going out to Bayside households and local businesses – and in the Redlands too where cafes, bookshops and other outlets will receive copies. There are also 2,000 copies going to various outlets in the Brisbane CBD and in West End and to a number of Visitor Information Centres in South East Queensland. So you might spot them in your travels!

Until the end of April the publishers of the guide are also running a promotion to win one of two $50 shopping vouchers which can be spent at any of the shopfront advertisers in the guide – to be in the draw all you need to do is go to page 27 in the guide and sign up to the Visit Wynnum Manly ENEWS using the QR code. The winners will be drawn after 30th April.

Even WynnumCentral has a little ad on page 18 – it was only after going to press that we realised the copy referenced business group Wynnum Business, which has now been renamed Brisbane Business Bayside. Doh!

If you’ve got this far you might like to know that we have a few copies to giveaway if you have not received your copy – drop us a line at admin@wynnumcentral.com.au with your name and address and we’ll get one out to you if we still have stock. Alternatively pop into Wynnum Central where many outlets have copies – we know for a fact that Mandala VGF in Florence Street do! (across the road from Woolworths and the library)

WynnumCentral recently spoke to local agency Social Direct about the work they do to help businesses through digital marketing.

WC: Tell us a bit about what prompted you to set up Social Direct
SD: When we launched in 2016, our motivation for setting up Social Direct in our eyes was clear – to help businesses build genuine, long-lasting relationships online. Prior to this adventure, our backgrounds were diverse, but with one common thread — a passion for digital marketing. We saw a gap in the market where local businesses struggled to leverage this power, and so we set out to bridge this gap.

WC: How many people are there at the agency?
SD: We have a team of four – Sam is our managing director, Kristen creative director, Abby is our marketing specialist and Sussie our marketing coordinator.

WC: What types of businesses do you work with?
SD: We predominantly work with established businesses sized between 1-20 employees who have a vision to grow and scale and are keen to expand their digital footprint and customer base. Businesses we work with cover most industries including tradies, mortgage brokers, financial planners, lawyers, ecommerce, retailers, technology and entertainment venues.

WC: We understand you’ve had a few wins for clients in the last 12 months?
SD: Yes we have! We were able to boost online sales for a Brisbane ecommerce site by a factor of 5, got a national consultancy firm to #1 for a number of highly competitive terms on Google and doubled bookings for a Brisbane-based electrician.

WC: That’s pretty impressive! What’s next for Social Direct?
SD: We’re growing, and looking for passionate marketers to join the team. Within the next 12 months, we’re aiming to open a Sydney office and bring a face-to-face element to our friends down south!

WC: And when you’re not working hard for your clients…?
SD: Outside of work, you’ll find Kristen and Sam exploring the beautiful waterways of Moreton Bay and the Broadwater, Abby immersed in a novel, and Sussie spending time with her young family.

Apart from cancellations during COVID, Australia Day celebrations are continuing as normal this year with a free community breakfast in George Clayton Park from 7am until 11 am on the day, brought to you by Wynnum Manly’s new(ish) councillor, Councillor Sara Whitmee (pictured below).

Councillor Sara Whitmee

There will be music and games as well as the compulsory sausage sizzle, pancakes and snowcones (we see no mention of traditional Australia Day fare damper and golden syrup with a cup of tea, but we’re sure it’ll be there).

As we reported last year, there continues to be growing support around Australia for a change to the date to acknowledge that the day is not necessarily something to celebrate for people of Aboriginal heritage.

Our own quick survey a year ago showed that 63% of respondents were in favour of changing the date, and that same survey – which is still live – now shows 70% in favour.

Did you take part in the survey last year and have you changed your mind since then? We’re interested to hear your thoughts again this year in the poll below.

Nearly two years ago we wrote about a – then – new arrival in Wynnum, gluten free and plant-based foods business Mandala VGF in Florence Street, located across the road from the library and Woolworths (read that article here).

Even though you might be forgiven for thinking that it’s a bit of a niche area, around 14% of Australians avoid gluten* either due to being diagnosed with Coeliac disease or other wheat sensitivity, or simply because they feel better without it. Other very commonly avoided food groups are dairy, with anything up to 12% of Australians** not consuming dairy, for health and other reasons, and eggs.

Catherine with a small loaf of bread

As business owner Catherine (pictured left) explains, “Although we run a gluten free and plant-based foods business, where all foods we produce are both of these – and so therefore also vegan – we have a lot of regular customers who buy our food who are not avoiding anything at all – they just love our food! However, for people who are gluten free and perhaps have one other thing they avoid, like dairy or egg, we are one of the few places where they can walk in and know that they can eat everything on the menu.”

And that menu has grown quite a lot since WynnumCentral last spoke with Catherine – now embracing a range of hot and cold savoury foods, a range of sweet tarts, bread, pizza and even a plant-based ‘cheese’.

Their latest addition is a range of family-sized versions of their takeaway foods, such as risottos, lasagne and pizza, which can be either collected at their factory or delivered in the local area. And ‘local’ covers quite a few suburbs in the Bayside area!

Strawberry Vanilla Treacle Tart

“The next thing on our agenda will be extending our opening hours to offer hot and cold dinner options for people either for pickup or via food delivery services like Uber and Menulog. Watch this space!” said Catherine.

As a little bit of fun for school age children during what’s left of the school holidays, Catherine is also running a pizza making and cupcake decorating workshop for 5-12 year olds this coming Sunday – all gluten free and plant-based, of course! In 1964 the Beatles recorded A Hard Day’s Night and Can’t Buy Me Love, Cassius Clay changed his name to Muhammad Ali and Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor got married (for the first time). And Manson Framers opened its doors in Wynnum.

Now an era has come to a close, with Manson Framers having closed their doors in Wynnum for the last time today, Tuesday 15th August.

The business has been run by Cameron and Sharon, members of the original founder Keith Richardson’s family.

“We would like to say thank you to all of our customers over the years.” said Cameron “It’s been a great pleasure and honour to have helped them with their treasured artworks and precious memorabilia and Sharon and I, as well as all the members of our small team would like to say how grateful we are for their faith in and support of our business since we opened in 1964.”

Cameron added that they are still working in the workshop completing all the remaining framing orders and that customers will be contacted by them to arrange collection times when their work is finished.

He explained that a number of factors had led to their decision to close, including increased costs of supplies and a steady rise in the costs of operating the business as well as a downturn in demand for their services.

WynnumCentral understands that the picture framing service will not continue at this stage.

Cameron will re-evaluate and reassess the framing business after a six month period which will most likely result in a greatly downsized operation. There will also be a mailing list on the Manson Framers website where you will be able to leave your name and email address for future contact. This list can also be used for the art supplies shop relocating to Wynnum West and to be run by Sharon trading as Bayside Art Supplies.

The needlework threads side of the business will not continue and there are even further reduced prices.
Team member Krissy Clark will also continue in her speciality of photo restoration from her home studio in Wynnum West, under the name Art by Krissy Clark.

As well as thanking their customers, Cameron and Sharon also thanked their committed staff both past and present for their service over the years.

Editor’s Note

Manson Framers have been stalwart supporters of the WynnumCentral project, including the markets that ran in Edith Street several years ago, the launch of the Republic of Wynnum (Manson Framers have always been ‘by appointment’ to the Republic for framing of aristocratic titles!) and this website, and we would also like to thank them for their support over the years.

WynnumCentral wishes everyone at Manson Framers the very best in their future endeavours …and we are very sad to see them leave Wynnum Central.
